Eliminate sulfur odors, constant maintenance, and fading
protection with Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP).
Pull a traditional magnesium anode rod
out of a water heater running on softened water for a few years, and you’ll
usually find the same thing: a pitted, chalky stub where a solid rod used to
be. Sometimes, it’s completely gone, leaving the steel tank entirely
unprotected. Combine this with the notorious "rotten-egg" sulfur
smell, and you have the two biggest complaints from homeowners and facility
managers alike.

The MMO (Mixed Metal Oxide) powered
anode was engineered specifically to eliminate these problems. It doesn't just
use a "better material"—it upgrades the entire corrosion prevention
mechanism to Impressed Current
Cathodic Protection (ICCP).
Different Ways of Doing the Same Job A
traditional magnesium rod protects a steel tank via galvanic sacrifice (Mg →
Mg²⁺ + 2e⁻). It acts as the more reactive metal,
corroding and dissolving so the steel tank doesn't have to. While effective,
the rod is literally designed to be eaten away. The more aggressive your water
chemistry, the faster it disappears, forcing you to constantly check and
replace it.
An MMO powered anode entirely skips
this sacrificial trade-off. It consists of a durable titanium rod coated with a
highly stable catalytic layer of mixed metal oxides, wired to a low-voltage
control box. Instead of dissolving itself, the ICCP system pushes a steady,
protective DC current into the tank electrolytically. The MMO coating
facilitates this protective reaction without being consumed by it.
The Sulfur Smell: Solved at the Source
When a magnesium rod corrodes in water containing sulfate-reducing bacteria
(common in well water), the chemical reaction produces hydrogen sulfide gas—the
culprit behind the rotten-egg odor. Because an MMO rod does not dissolve
sacrificial metal into the water, it completely cuts off the food source for
these bacteria, permanently eliminating the smell.

Constant Output vs. Fading Protection As
a magnesium rod wears down, its surface area decreases, leading to weaker
protective current. By year three, it offers a fraction of the protection it
did on day one. In contrast, an MMO ICCP anode’s output is actively regulated
by its control box. It delivers the exact same optimal level of protection on
day 3,000 as it did on day one.
Is an ICCP Solution Right for You? While
magnesium remains a cheap, default option for mild water, it struggles in
aggressive environments. If you are dealing with softened water that chews through
rods rapidly, if you want to banish sulfur smells forever, or if you simply
want a maintenance-free tank that lasts over a decade, the MMO powered anode is
the ultimate solution.
